Atlas Planning Group
Atlas Planning Group are a talented team of Chartered Town Planners who devise creative and innovative solutions to complex planning problems. We maximise the potential for our clients turning land and buildings into valuable assets.
The company, started out five years ago by our Director, Dan, a young planner at the time, along with three other exceptional planners. Our rapid success has proven that enthusiasm, a thirst for learning, and a positive attitude is worth far more than years of experience. We believe it is vital to ensure that any aspiring planner starting out is offered the best support and advice, and not just stuck doing the same tasks day in day out. This is why we offer a tailored Mentorship Programme, led by our in-house mentor. They will offer the level of support needed for any individual to thrive, not just survive. Through regular mentor meetings and personalised CPD sessions led by our expert planners, you will receive unparalleled guidance and support, ensuring you embark on a journey that not only propels your career but also shapes you as a planning professional.
With over a decade of experience in training and mentoring professionals to achieve their full potential, we have a deep understanding of what it takes to develop exceptional mentors and support the rapid growth of young professionals. Our track record speaks for itself, as many of our planners have achieved chartered status within just two years of graduating.
We take pride in our tailored mentorship programmes, which are designed to ensure that young professionals learn the right skills at the right time. This includes mastering crucial aspects such as researching effectively for feasibility studies, preparing, managing, and submitting planning applications, and receiving technical guidance on using specific software tools. Our approach ensures that ambitious career goals are not just aspirational but also manageable and achievable.
In the upcoming year, we are excited to extend our support to the next exceptional candidate through two possible apprenticeship programmes.
The first is the ‘Chartered Town Planner Apprenticeship’. This unique opportunity involves pursuing a relevant undergraduate degree, such as Geography, and deviating from the traditional path of pursuing a master's degree in planning. Instead, successful candidates will join our team, receiving ongoing support for their professional development with guidance from a partner university. Successful completion of the programme will give the you the status of a qualified planner.
The second is the ‘Town Planning Assistant Apprenticeship’. This is designed for those who would either like to embark on a career in town planning from school or college, or those currently working in support roles in the profession who would like to gain a first qualification that recognises their skills. It can open up new career paths into full planning positions in due course. Individuals undertaking this work would be involved in providing technical and administrative support to Chartered Town Planners to deliver new developments and to shape and create sustainable places for the benefit of the public.
Our apprenticeship programmes offer a comprehensive understanding of the field, hands-on experience, and mentorship, aligning with our philosophy of delivering exceptional and expedited results. We look forward to helping young professionals embark on a successful career journey.

At Atlas, we are committed to the continuous development of our apprenticeships and training schemes in the coming years. Currently, our offerings encompass a degree apprenticeship programme designed to support recent graduates as they embark on their professional journey. In addition to this, we proudly extend opportunities for summer internships, targeting motivated and ambitious individuals eager to immerse themselves in the dynamic world of planning.
Our summer internships are unique in several ways. Unlike larger consultancies, we expose interns to a diverse range of projects and clientele, including landowners, developers, homeowners, and farmers. This diversity in our work portfolio allows our mentor-led approach to tailor a programme that ensures interns gain a wide spectrum of experiences. This includes participating in site visits, crafting feasibility reports for projects of varying scales, and delving deeper into industry terminology through real-life examples. Interns will have the chance to witness firsthand the intricacies of working in a private town planning consultancy.
Our commitment to future development includes plans to expand and enhance our apprenticeship and internship offerings. We aim to increase the depth and breadth of experiences for participants, including more exposure to cutting-edge technologies and trends within the planning industry. Furthermore, we are actively exploring partnerships with educational institutions to provide participants with additional learning opportunities.
In conclusion, our focus is on not just providing opportunities for young professionals but also on evolving these opportunities to meet the changing demands of the industry. We believe that our apprenticeships and training schemes will continue to be a vital part of nurturing the next generation of planning professionals.
The Chartered Town Planner Apprenticeship is a real job in planning which enable you to work and study at the same time. Successful completion of the apprenticeship will give you professional recognition and status as a qualified planner.
Training is delivered in tandem by us, with on-the-job experience and the chosen University partner, delivering the academic programme.

In addition to our graduate apprenticeship programme, we provide various opportunities for young individuals who are taking their first steps into their careers.
Our internships offer a valuable way for young professionals to gain hands-on experience in the field. We require a minimum internship duration of four weeks for it to be a paid position, which is typically offered during the summer. However, we can also provide shorter 1-4 week unpaid experiences, which still include mentor support as well as the same opportunities that a paid intern would receive.
We welcome individuals for work experience opportunities throughout the year, including during Easter and Christmas breaks. These experiences offer an indication into the world of planning and come with guidance from a mentor, providing valuable insights into the industry.
These opportunities are designed to support and nurture the career aspirations of young individuals, whether they are seeking to explore planning as a potential career path or gain practical experience to enhance their professional development. Our commitment is to help young talents kick start their careers and achieve their goals.
